Measure learning progress without endless tests

A few meaningful signals are enough

Choose two or three skills

For example, solving equations, reading short passages or retelling a story. Indicators should match the learner’s goal.

Record a baseline

Start with a short diagnostic or ask the student to explain the topic aloud. This gives you something to compare later.

Look beyond the grade

Speed, independence, number of hints needed and clarity of explanation are often more informative than a single mark.

Compare like with like

Repeat tasks of roughly equal difficulty instead of drawing conclusions from unrelated exercises.

Review regularly

Every few weeks, discuss what improved and update the plan if the learning needs have changed.
